Cory Barlog Confirms Another Kratos‑Centric God of War Is Already in the Works

When the lights dimmed at the God of War: Laufey showcase during San Diego Comic‑Con 2026, lead creative Cory Barlog seized the moment to drop a bombshell: a brand‑new main‑line title starring Kratos is already in the studio’s pipeline.

The announcement came just as the team was teasing the next Norse chapter, slated for a February 16, 2027 launch. Barlog made it clear that Laufey isn’t a stand‑alone adventure; it’s the narrative bridge that will set the stage for whatever comes next for the Ghost of Sparta.

While the panel stayed focused on Laufey’s story – revealing tidbits about the “Everywhen” afterlife and a cameo from the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet – Barlog was tight‑lipped about the details of the upcoming sequel. He did, however, stress that the two projects are practically intertwined, with lore threads from Laufey feeding directly into the new game’s foundation.

One of the more whimsical moments involved Jack Quaid’s odd‑ball blue‑cube character, Phranque. Barlog described the cube as a tiny puzzle piece that’s been part of the reboot’s design from day one, hinting that it will help build a “something so amazing” in the next installment.

Sharing the stage with Barlog were Kratos’ voice actor Christopher Judge, actress Deborah Ann Woll, writer Perlina Lau and game director Ariel Lawrence. Judge quipped that seeing Kratos plunge into Egyptian mythology would feel like “completing his circle,” a nod to his own sci‑fi roots as Teal’c on Stargate.

Beyond Laufey, Santa Monica Studio hinted at a packed lineup: the upcoming Norse sequel, a full‑scale trilogy remake, an Amazon Prime Video series (currently on pause after an injury to lead Ryan Hurst), and finally the Kratos‑focused sequel that still lacks a release window.

Even though Kratos won’t be a playable character in Laufey, the God of War showcase dropped several snippets of him appearing in cutscenes as his late wife Faye journeys through the afterlife. Fans can therefore expect the Ghost of Sparta to stay very much in the picture as the saga marches forward.
