Congressman Derrick Van Orden's Heroic Rescue on I-80: Saving a Teen from a Fiery Crash

A routine drive along Interstate 80 in Iowa transformed into a scene of harrowing heroism on Monday evening, as U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisconsin) demonstrated extraordinary courage, pulling a 17-year-old boy from the fiery wreckage of a multi-vehicle crash near Van Meter.

The Wisconsin congressman, himself a former Navy SEAL, was traveling west on I-80 around 5:30 p.m.

when he witnessed the horrific collision involving a pickup truck, an SUV, and a semi-truck. In the chaos that ensued, Van Orden spotted a terrifying sight: a pickup truck on fire, with a young man trapped inside.

Without a moment's hesitation, Van Orden sprang into action. Disregarding his own safety, he rushed towards the burning vehicle.

As flames began to engulf the truck, he managed to reach the trapped 17-year-old, identified as a minor by authorities. With sheer determination, Van Orden pulled the boy free from the rapidly escalating inferno, moments before the entire cabin was consumed by fire.

Once the young man was safe, Van Orden didn't stop there.

Along with other quick-thinking Good Samaritans who had also stopped to offer aid, he helped provide initial care to the injured and assisted in directing traffic around the perilous scene until emergency services arrived.
