BMW India Announces the Arrival of Neue Klasse EVs, Kicking Off With the iX3 Long‑Wheelbase

On World EV Day, BMW India’s chief executive Hardeep Singh Brar shared a piece of news that many EV enthusiasts have been waiting for – the launch of the brand’s next‑generation electric lineup, called Neue Klasse. While the name might sound like a fancy design term, it actually represents a completely new architecture built around an 800‑volt system, promising longer drives between charges and a suite of high‑tech features.

The very first model to wear the Neue Klasse badge in India will be the iX3, but not just any iX3. Buyers will get the long‑wheelbase (LWB) version, which adds extra rear‑legroom – a nod to Indian preferences for spacious back seats. Under the hood, the iX3 LWB is slated to house a massive 108.7 kWh battery pack paired with two electric motors that together churn out roughly 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. In plain language, that means brisk acceleration and plenty of pull for highway cruising.

Range anxiety? BMW says the new iX3 should be able to travel about 805 km on a single charge according to the WLTP test cycle. That figure comfortably tops the 800‑km mark that the company has set as a benchmark for all Neue Klasse EVs. Fast‑charging won’t be a headache either – a 400 kW DC charger could refill the battery from zero to 80 percent in just a few minutes, making long trips far more practical.

Beyond the powertrain, the iX3 LWB will debut a refreshed interior that includes a panoramic vision display, a sleek new dashboard layout and upgraded driver‑assistance systems. The exterior also gets a subtle facelift, aligning with the broader Neue Klasse design language that emphasizes clean lines and a futuristic silhouette.

BMW isn’t stopping with the iX3. The automaker has hinted that several other models – both SUVs and sedans – will join the Neue Klasse family over the next few years, each built on the same 800‑volt platform and targeting the coveted 800 km-plus range. This strategy dovetails with BMW’s current dominance in the Indian luxury EV segment, where the iX1 LWB already enjoys strong sales and the recently launched i5 LWB continues to broaden the portfolio.

For Indian customers, the arrival of Neue Klasse could mark a turning point. One in four BMWs sold in the country today is an electric vehicle, and the new generation promises to make that number climb even higher. As the market matures and charging infrastructure expands, BMW’s bet on long‑range, high‑performance EVs looks poised to pay off.
