BJP MP Pushes for a National Steel Research Hub in Ballari‑Vijayanagara

Earlier this week, a Karnataka BJP Member of Parliament raised his voice in New Delhi, asking the Union government to consider setting up a National Steel Research Centre right in the heart of the Ballari‑Vijayanagara region. The plea comes against a backdrop of booming iron‑ore extraction in the area, which has long been touted as a strategic asset for India’s steel ambitions.

“Our region sits on some of the richest iron‑ore deposits in the country,” the MP said during a press briefing, “yet we lack a dedicated research facility that can translate that natural wealth into advanced steel technologies and quality jobs for our youth.” He stressed that a specialised centre would not only spur local employment but also dovetail with the broader ‘Make in India’ vision, positioning Karnataka as a key player in the national steel ecosystem.

The proposal envisions a research hub under the aegis of the Ministry of Steel, possibly collaborating with public sector giants such as SAIL and private players keen on innovation. By tapping into the legacy of the Vijayanagara empire – a historic centre of engineering and craftsmanship – the MP believes the new institute could blend ancient ingenuity with cutting‑edge metallurgical science.

He urged the Centre to act swiftly, noting that every month of delay translates into lost opportunities for both the local populace and the nation’s steel output.
