Asian Games Rollercoaster: Tejaswin Shankar's Decathlon Challenge and India's Surfing Success

Decathlon Drama: Tejaswin Shankar Slips to Third at Asian Games Amidst Surfing Triumphs

Indian decathlete Tejaswin Shankar faced a challenging day at the Asian Games, dropping to third after the discus throw, while Indian surfers shone brightly, all advancing to the next round.

The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya have certainly kept fans on the edge of their seats, and Sunday was no exception, especially for Indian athletics. Hopes were running high for Tejaswin Shankar, our talented decathlete, who had been leading the pack with an impressive 5,270 points. But as often happens in multi-event disciplines, fortunes can turn on a dime, and Tejaswin experienced a bit of a wobble in the discus throw.

Following the discus event, Tejaswin found himself slipping from his coveted top spot. His best throw, clocking in at 36.77 meters, was unfortunately a good four meters shy of his personal best. This slight dip in performance, while still respectable, proved costly in the highly competitive decathlon standings. As the dust settled, he accumulated 5,869 points overall, which placed him third, behind strong contenders from China and Japan.

Looking ahead, the road to gold or even a podium finish for Tejaswin will be quite challenging. The remaining two events – the pole vault and the javelin throw – are, by his own admission, not exactly his strongest suits. This means he'll need to dig deep and perhaps pull off some unexpected performances to regain lost ground and climb back into medal contention. It’s a true test of grit and determination that we'll all be watching closely.

Meanwhile, on the longer-distance tracks, India saw mixed results in the women's marathon race walk. Manju Rani put in a valiant effort, completing the grueling race in 3:40:17 to secure a respectable sixth position. Her perseverance through such a demanding event is commendable. Unfortunately, for Priyanka Goswami, the race ended prematurely as she was disqualified just after the 9-kilometer mark. A tough break, no doubt, but that's the unpredictable nature of competitive sport.

But it wasn't all about the track and field drama. India had some fantastic news from the surfing arena! All four of our nation's surfers — Sivaraj Babu, Kishore Kumar, Sugar Shanti Gayen, and Kamali Prakash — absolutely aced their respective shortboard events, successfully advancing to round three. This consistent performance across the board is a real testament to their skill and dedication.

Sivaraj Babu delivered a strong showing, scoring 8.96 against Iran's Davoud Khadir. Not to be outdone, Sugar Shanti Gayen carved out an impressive 7.33 against Chen Wan-yu from Chinese Taipei, while Kamali Prakash secured her spot in the next round with a solid 7.57 against Camille Marie Spaccarotella of Singapore. It's truly exciting to see our surfers make such waves, and we're eagerly anticipating their performances in the upcoming rounds.
