Armed robbery suspect captured after marathon standoff in Northeast Fresno

It was a quiet Tuesday morning in Northeast Fresno when a call cracked open the calm at around 11:10 a.m. A clerk at the AutoZone on Gettysburg Avenue and First Street reported that a man in his forties had swaggered in, flashed a gun and bolted out with merchandise.

Within minutes, undercover detectives on the beat spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in a backyard just off Gettysburg. The suspect’s car was still there, engine cold, a clear sign they were onto something.

Police quickly sealed off the block, closing Gettysburg between First and Fresno streets. Drones buzzed overhead, feeding live footage that showed the gunman slip inside the house, accompanied by a woman whose identity remains unknown.

Negotiators tried to make contact, but the door remained shut and the radio silent. The standoff stretched on, ticking past the two‑hour mark and eventually climbing to roughly eight hours as the suspect barricaded himself.

When patience ran thin, the department called in SWAT. The tactical team approached the home with caution, breaching the entry point once they were certain it was safe. Inside, they found the suspect alone, finally surrendering without further incident.

While officers have placed the man in custody, his name has not been released to the public, and the firearm he brandished during the robbery is still missing. Detectives say he carries a prior record and will face armed‑robbery charges, with additional firearms counts likely to follow once the weapon is recovered.

Traffic on Gettysburg Avenue has since returned to normal, and police are urging anyone who might have seen anything—whether a vehicle, a suspicious individual, or a discarded weapon—to get in touch with the Fresno Police Department.
