Armed Robbery Suspect Captured After Lengthy Standoff in Northeast Fresno

On a sunny September morning in Fresno, police got a frantic call about an armed robbery at the AutoZone on Gettysburg Avenue and First Street. The clerk reported a man in his forties flashing a gun, snatching merchandise, and fleeing the scene.

Within minutes, undercover officers had the suspect’s car parked in a backyard just off Gettysburg. They cordoned off the block between First and Fresno streets, set up a perimeter, and even launched a drone to keep eyes on the house.

According to the department, the suspect slipped into the home with a woman – those were the only two people inside when officers arrived. Attempts to talk him down fell flat, and the situation quickly escalated into a standoff.

SWAT teams were called in, and they spent the better part of the day negotiating, monitoring, and waiting. The suspect barricaded himself for roughly eight hours, a marathon of tension for everyone involved.

When the moment was right, SWAT entered the home and took the suspect into custody without any shots fired or injuries reported. He’s now being questioned, and police say he has a prior record. While the firearm used in the robbery hasn’t been recovered yet, authorities expect additional firearms charges once it turns up.

The suspect’s name is still being withheld, but the police are urging anyone with information to reach out. Gettysburg Avenue has since reopened to traffic, and life in the neighborhood is slowly returning to normal.
