Anthropic’s Claude Duet: An AI Assistant That Takes Over the Busy‑Work for Professionals

Claude Duet explained – what it does, how it works, who can get it and when it might be on your phone

Anthropic’s new Claude Duet is a background‑running AI agent that can scan your apps, draft emails, schedule meetings and more – currently in a US‑only research preview for Claude Pro and Max users.

Imagine an assistant that doesn’t just wait for you to type a question, but actually checks your inbox, spots a missed invoice, and drafts a reply while you’re sipping coffee. That’s the promise behind Claude Duet, Anthropic’s newest AI‑agent app aimed squarely at freelancers, small‑business owners and anyone with a never‑ending to‑do list.

At its core, Claude Duet is built on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 model. The difference? It runs a lightweight virtual machine with its own browser, letting it hop between services – Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, you name it – without you having to open each app. You give it a command, either by typing or speaking, and it keeps the conversation alive, nudging you only when it really needs a decision.

What can it actually do? First thing in the morning, Duet can pull a quick summary of the most important updates from the apps you’ve linked. Throughout the day it checks those connections every few hours and pops a notification the moment something needs attention – a new email that looks urgent, an unpaid invoice, a calendar slot that’s suddenly free. From there you can tell it to schedule a meeting, draft a reply, build a simple dashboard, or even spin up a rough web‑app prototype.

Because it remembers the skills and preferences you’ve already set up in your Claude account, you don’t have to re‑configure every connector. The Claude Marketplace offers more than 6,000 plugins, so you could, for example, pull customer data from HubSpot, draft a LinkedIn job post, or generate a Canva‑based marketing graphic – all without leaving the Duet interface.

Privacy‑wise, Anthropic says Duet only acts on high‑level instructions. It can read messages and organize information autonomously, but it will ask for explicit permission before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting anything. Certain high‑risk actions – like trading stocks or moving money between accounts – are permanently blocked, even if you say “go ahead”. Sensitive data such as credit‑card numbers or government IDs are filtered out unless you clearly tell the assistant to use them.

For now, Claude Duet is being rolled out as a research preview. Access is limited to users in the United States who already subscribe to Claude Pro or Claude Max, and you need to join a waitlist before you can download the iOS, Android or web version. The usage limits are the same as your existing Claude plan, but background monitoring can eat through those limits a bit faster than a regular chat.

Anthropic hasn’t announced a wider launch yet, but the company hints that the preview will help shape a future where the AI agent can handle even more complex workflows – think automated Shopify storefront edits or signing into sites with 1Password. Until then, if you’re juggling a handful of clients or trying to keep a small team on track, signing up for the waitlist might be worth a try.
