After 79 Years, Trains Finally Reach Rowghat – A New Rail Lifeline for Chhattisgarh

Rowghat welcomes its first train as the Tadoki‑Rowghat link completes a 95‑km rail corridor

For the first time since independence, Rowghat in Chhattisgarh is connected to the national railway network. The new 17.5 km Tadoki‑Rowghat stretch ends decades of isolation and promises faster movement of people and iron ore.

When the whistle of a locomotive drifted over the hills of Kanker district on October 21, the people of Rowghat could hardly believe their ears. After nearly eight decades of standing apart from the country’s rail web, the town finally heard the sound of a train rolling in.

The moment was marked by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai cutting the ceremonial ribbon on the ground, while Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined the ceremony virtually from New Delhi to flag off the inaugural passenger service. The 17.5 km stretch that links Tadoki to Rowghat completes the long‑awaited 95‑km Dalli‑Rajhara‑Rowghat line, a project that has cost about ₹1,628 crore.

Until yesterday, regular passenger trains stopped at Tadoki, some 77.5 km away. The new section brings the state capital, Raipur, within easy reach, turning a journey that once required a bumpy road trip into a smooth rail ride. Families can now think of sending their children to colleges in Raipur, patients can travel to better hospitals, and traders can move goods without the dreaded delays.

But the rail line isn’t just about personal convenience. Rowghat sits on a belt of high‑grade iron ore that feeds the Bhilai Steel Plant and other steel mills across the nation. With the rail link in place, raw material can be shuttled swiftly to the plants, cutting logistics costs and giving a much‑needed boost to the regional economy.

This corridor is part of a bigger vision – a 240‑km Dalli‑Rajhara‑Rowghat‑Jagdalpur railway that the Chhattisgarh government, NMDC, SAIL and Indian Railways are developing together. In the longer term the line could stretch further into Odisha’s Koraput district and even reach the port city of Visakhapatnam, creating a seamless east‑west freight corridor.

On the same day, the chief minister also opened a 22‑km broad‑gauge section between Abhanpur and Kurud, a segment of the ongoing Abhanpur‑Dhamtari gauge‑conversion project. In addition, a foundation stone was laid for a modern electric‑locomotive maintenance hub in Raipur. When finished, the facility will accommodate up to 300 high‑horsepower electric locomotives and may even start building 9,000‑horsepower units for export.

Chhattisgarh’s rail push is massive: about ₹57,000 crore worth of works are in progress, the state has achieved 100 % railway electrification, and 32 stations are being upgraded or rebuilt. The Rowghat breakthrough is just one bright spot in a landscape that is being reshaped, rail by rail.
