A Weekend of Unrelenting Fire: Ukraine and Russia Trade Devastating Drone Blows

Across Friday and Saturday, large fires erupted at Wildberries warehouses near St. Petersburg and in the Leningrad region – massive blows to Russian logistics, prompting facility closures and injuries. Even a Tyumen Oil Refinery in western Siberia, a logistics facility in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel and lubricants warehouse in Rostov-on-Don were hit, confirmed by none other than President Zelenskyy on X, underscoring Ukraine's capabilities to strike far behind enemy lines. Russia, meanwhile, reported shooting down an incredible 571 Ukrainian drones overnight on Friday across 15 regions and the Black Sea, a number that's just… staggering, if accurate.

And let's not forget Romania, a NATO member, which found itself drawn into the fray. For two consecutive days, Friday and Saturday, Romanian air defenses had to scramble. An F-16 fighter jet successfully shot down a drone near Padina, northeast of Bucharest, on Friday, and then another near the Ukrainian border on Saturday. Imagine being in Romania, just trying to live your life, and having these drones flying overhead. It's a stark reminder of how close this conflict is, how easily it can spill over, and it's certainly not the first time. There were similar incidents in May and June, painting a worrying picture of the conflict’s wider ripple effects.
