A Symbol of Hope: Toronto Zoo Welcomes Zorig, the Bactrian Camel Calf

A beautiful Bactrian camel calf, born this past spring, has finally received his official name: Zorig. This chunky little fellow already weighs in at an impressive 340 pounds! He’s the third calf for proud parents Suria, who’s 11, and 10-year-old Zip, making them quite the experienced duo. Right now, little Zorig is busy learning the ropes, particularly mastering the art of eating solid food, which, let's be honest, is a big milestone for any youngster.

The name Zorig, pronounced ZOH-rig, carries a beautiful weight. It’s a Mongolian word meaning 'courage and determination,' and it was chosen through a truly thoughtful process. The Embassy of Mongolia in Canada actually reached out to traditional Mongolian camel herders for suggestions, ensuring the name had deep cultural resonance. It’s a wonderful nod to the calf’s heritage and a hopeful wish for his future, especially given the precarious state of his wild relatives.

Because here’s the thing: Zorig isn't just any camel. He's a Bactrian camel, a species that is, heartbreakingly, critically endangered. Imagine this – fewer than 950 of these magnificent animals are left in the wild, primarily roaming the remote, harsh landscapes of Mongolia and China. Every single birth, like Zorig’s, is a lifeline, a glimmer of hope for the species. His arrival brings the Toronto Zoo’s Bactrian camel herd to a total of seven, a small but mighty contribution to global conservation efforts.

The official naming ceremony took place on a pleasant Friday afternoon, September 11, 2026, right there at the Toronto Zoo. It was a lovely occasion, albeit with some modern twists! While Toronto Zoo CEO Dolf DeJong was there in person, Sarantogos Erdenetsogt, the Ambassador of Mongolia to Canada, joined virtually, connecting across continents to celebrate. We also had Tsogzolmaa Dorj-Adiya, representing the Honorary Consul of Mongolia Toronto, present in person, highlighting the deep international collaboration involved in protecting these incredible creatures.
