A Grand Thirtieth: Red Oaks Nature Center Celebrates Three Decades of Nature and Community

The festivities are set for Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find all the fun right there at the Red Oaks Nature Center, located at 30300 Hales Street in Madison Heights, Michigan. It’s super easy to get to, just off 13 Mile Road, a little bit west of Dequindre Road. And here's the best part: admission is absolutely free, and there's no need to register in advance. Oakland County Parks, who manages this beautiful space, has pulled out all the stops to make this anniversary truly special. This center, now a vital part of our community, has quite a history, a real journey through time, actually. It all started back in the 1950s when the Lamphere school district purchased the land, building Simonds Elementary and naming the surrounding forest Simonds Woods. Fast forward to the 1980s, and Madison Heights acquired the property, lovingly renaming the forest Suarez Friendship Woods to honor then-Mayor George Suarez. The nature center itself officially opened its doors with a proud ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 5, 1996, becoming a beacon for environmental education.

Like many community initiatives, Red Oaks faced its share of challenges. In the early 2000s, financial struggles led to staff cuts, but the spirit of the center never wavered, thanks to dedicated volunteers who kept the programming alive. It’s really quite inspiring when you think about it. Then, in 2012, a pivotal moment arrived when Madison Heights inked a lease deal with Oakland County Parks. This partnership has since brought stability and expanded opportunities, ensuring that Red Oaks Nature Center, including the cherished Suarez Friendship Woods, continues to thrive for generations to come. It’s a testament to community visionaries like former City Councilman Lindell Ross, who championed the property's acquisition, and current City Councilman Quinn Wright, who continues to support its legacy.
