A Chilling End: Bengaluru Woman Dies Days After Accusing Husband of Alleged Mercury Poisoning

In a deeply tragic turn of events, M Kavitha, a 36-year-old woman from Bengaluru, passed away last Wednesday. What makes her death particularly heartbreaking is that it occurred just a week after she bravely registered a First Information Report (FIR) against her husband, accusing him of an almost unbelievable act: injecting mercury into her body.

Imagine the despair and the sheer terror she must have endured. For what is reported to be over a decade, Kavitha's marriage to K Venkat Ramana, a lab technician, was, it seems, a living nightmare. Allegations suggest a cruel cycle of physical and mental torture, often fueled by relentless dowry demands. On October 18th, she courageously walked into the HAL police station and filed an FIR against Venkat Ramana. The initial charges laid out the grave allegations: cruelty under IPC Section 498A, attempt to murder under Section 307, causing hurt by means of poison under Section 328, and common intention under Section 34. She was, at that point, quite literally fighting for her life and for a semblance of justice.

Sadly, her brave fight came to an end on October 25th. Her passing, of course, drastically shifted the legal landscape of the case. The police, recognizing the profound gravity of the situation, swiftly updated the charges. To the existing sections, they added Section 302, which pertains to murder. It’s a somber progression from attempt to murder to a full-blown murder investigation, underscoring the severity of the alleged crime.

It's also worth noting that Kavitha hadn't been living with her husband for the past two years, having moved back in with her parents in an attempt to escape the alleged abuse. This, tragically, is a step many victims are forced to take when facing such domestic turmoil. It was her devastated sister who officially filed the complaint, standing up for Kavitha even as she battled for her life, ensuring her voice was heard.

Authorities have, thankfully, moved swiftly. K Venkat Ramana has been arrested, and the investigation is now fully underway.
