A Celebration Amidst Crisis: BJP's Welcome for Pradhan Sparks Outrage Over NEET Fallout

Picture this: the usually bustling Parliament House complex, on a Monday, July 27, 2026. A line of BJP MPs, a sea of smiles and applause, gathered near the Makar Dwar entrance. They weren't there to greet a returning war hero, but to welcome Dharmendra Pradhan, the former Union Education Minister, just two days after his resignation amidst a firestorm of protests over the catastrophic NEET paper leak. Slogans like 'Dharmendra Pradhan zindabad' filled the air, traditional headgear and stoles presented, almost as if he’d achieved a grand victory.

To say the Congress party was aghast would be an understatement. Their general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, didn't mince words, calling the whole spectacle 'utterly shameful' and, quite frankly, a 'grave insult' to the countless young people whose dreams have been shattered by the exam irregularities. He highlighted the painful irony: Pradhan was being felicitated when he should have been offering a heartfelt apology, not blaming students for being 'misled,' as he had done previously.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, echoed this sentiment, perhaps even more powerfully. For him, this wasn't an honor at all. 'This is not an honour,' he declared, 'but a celebration of the ruined futures of lakhs of children.' He went on to paint Pradhan as 'a symbol of corruption and India’s ruined education system.' Allegations of widespread paper leaks, irregularities, and systemic failures led to an unprecedented outcry from students, parents, and activists across the country. The immense public pressure mounted, culminating in Pradhan's resignation on July 25, 2026, and the Centre's eventual decision to cancel the exam and hand the probe over to the CBI. A necessary step, no doubt, but one that came after weeks of immense distress and uncertainty for millions.

Indeed, the outrage wasn't confined to social media or political statements. A persistent, 36-day agitation, spearheaded by groups like the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by the earnest 30-year-old public relations graduate Abhijeet Dipke, saw students and activists taking to the streets, particularly at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Even renowned activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the fray on June 28, enduring a forced shift to Safdarjung and then Medanta hospitals as the protests escalated. Their unified demand? Interestingly, Pradhan, in a prior interaction with Jairam Ramesh, described himself as a 'street fighter' and 'not an A/C room activist.' Yet, the optics of his welcome in Parliament, just days after stepping down over a massive public failure, seemed to contradict that self-image for many. Moving forward, the government has announced that from 2027, the NEET-UG will be conducted in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode, perhaps a small silver lining after such a tumultuous period.
