The first impulse for many of us is to click ‘add to cart’ for a shiny new RO purifier, convinced that a higher price tag equals healthier water. Hold that thought – the story isn’t that simple.

According to a recent report from the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) in Roorkee, reverse‑osmosis systems are not a one‑size‑fits‑all solution. The institute urges households to base their choice on the actual quality of their water, not on glossy advertisements promising “pure” water.

So, when does an RO purifier actually make sense? Experts point to just two clear‑cut scenarios. First, if the source water’s total dissolved solids (TDS) exceed 500 mg/L (or ppm). Many vendors now market multi‑stage units that bundle RO, UV and UF together. Those are truly needed only when water is both high in dissolved solids and microbiologically unsafe – a common scenario in homes that blend borewell water with municipal supply. For regular municipal water, a simple UV (or UV + UF) setup usually does the trick.
