Vaigai Dam on High Alert: Torrential Rains Unleash Flood Warning in Tamil Nadu

Torrential downpours have battered Tamil Nadu, causing widespread disruption and pushing the state's vital water bodies to their limits. Amidst the relentless deluge, the Vaigai Dam, a lifeline for many districts, has seen its water levels surge dramatically, prompting authorities to issue a high-level flood alert for communities residing along the Vaigai River.

The iconic Vaigai Dam, with its maximum capacity of 71 feet, has now reached a critical level of 69.17 feet.

This rapid rise is a direct consequence of the continuous heavy rainfall lashing the catchment areas, leading to a substantial increase in inflow. The situation demands immediate attention and precautionary measures from residents.

To manage the immense pressure from the incoming waters, authorities have taken the necessary step of opening the dam's shutters.

The current inflow into the dam is recorded at a staggering 6,859 cusecs, while the outflow has been increased to 6,919 cusecs to release the excess water safely. This controlled discharge is crucial to prevent the dam from overflowing, but it escalates the flood risk downstream.

Consequently, an urgent flood warning has been sounded for all those living on the banks of the Vaigai River in the districts of Madurai and Dindigul.

Residents are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, move to higher ground, and avoid venturing into the river or low-lying areas that are prone to inundation. Fishermen and farmers working near the river are also urged to cease their activities immediately.

District administrations are closely monitoring the situation around the clock and have deployed emergency response teams.

Public announcements are being made to ensure that the warning reaches every household in the affected zones. Safety remains the paramount concern as the state braces for the continued impact of the heavy rains and the subsequent increase in river flow.
