The Heart of Tradition: Boston's North End Feasts Return with Unforgettable Celebrations

Ah, the North End of Boston! There's just something magical about it, isn't there? Those narrow, winding streets, the aroma of garlic and espresso always in the air… and then there are the feasts. They're more than just events; they're the very soul of the neighborhood, a beautiful, boisterous outpouring of heritage and faith that transforms everything. Well, mark your calendars, because 2026 is shaping up to be an absolutely incredible year for these iconic Italian-American celebrations!

The season kicks off subtly in June, warming us up for the summer's grand spectacles. First up, we'll see the Feast of Santa Maria Di Anzano Procession on Sunday, June 7th. It’s the 121st annual procession, an incredible testament to enduring faith, beginning right from St. Leonard Church on Hanover & Prince Streets at 1:00 PM. If you're an early bird, consider joining the 10:30 AM Italian mass beforehand—it really sets the tone, you know?

Later in the month, keep an eye out for the Saint Padre Pio Procession on Sunday, June 21st, and then the Saint Theresa Procession wrapping up June on Sunday, June 28th. These early processions, while perhaps not as sprawling as the later summer festivals, are deeply meaningful, offering a glimpse into the quiet devotion that underpins the entire feast season.

As July rolls around, the energy really starts to build! The Saint Joseph Feast truly opens the main summer feast season, running from Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th right on Hanover Street. Organized by the Saint Joseph Society, it’s a wonderful way to dive headfirst into the festivities, with all the sights, sounds, and, of course, the smells of traditional Italian street food.

Close on its heels is the Saint Agrippina di Mineo Feast, a vibrant celebration honoring the young martyr of Mineo, Sicily. This one takes over Hanover and Battery Streets from Thursday, July 30th to Sunday, August 2nd. Things officially kick off Thursday at 7:00 PM, followed by full days of fun from noon to 11:00 PM Friday through Sunday. Don’t miss the solemn procession of Saint Agrippina on Thursday at 7:30 PM, or the grander, more elaborate Grand Procession on Sunday, starting at 12:30 PM. It's a powerful experience, trust me.

August, oh August, that’s when the North End truly comes alive with a string of spectacular events! The Madonna Della Cava Feast, celebrating its 106th anniversary here in Boston, runs from Friday, August 7th to Sunday, August 9th. You’ll find it centered around Hanover & Battery Streets, and further down Hanover between Charter and Commercial. This beautiful tradition was brought over by immigrants from Pietraperzia, Sicily, in the early 1900s, a testament to their enduring faith in the Madonna Della Cava, their patron saint. Expect lively evenings on Friday, and joyful afternoon and evening sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Then comes what many consider the crown jewel: the Fisherman's Feast of the Madonna Del Soccorso di Sciacca. From Thursday, August 13th to Sunday, August 16th, the area around Fleet, Lewis, and North Streets buzzes with activity. This is truly special, you know, being the North End’s oldest continuously running Italian festival, rooted in a 16th-century Sciacca tradition. It honors the Madonna del Soccorso, or Our Lady of Help, and kicks off with a poignant Blessing of the Fishing Waters at Christopher Columbus Park on Thursday at 6:00 PM. The feast officially opens Friday at 6:00 PM, leading into glorious full days of celebration Saturday and Sunday. The Grand Procession on Sunday at 1:00 PM is a sight to behold, culminating in the absolutely breathtaking Flight of the Angel at 8:00 PM – seriously, it gives you chills!

As the month draws to a close, we have two more fantastic celebrations. The San Gennaro Feast lights up The Prado (Paul Revere Mall) from Friday, August 21st to Sunday, August 23rd. It's always a lively one, brimming with community spirit.

And then, to cap it all off, the legendary 107th Annual Saint Anthony's Feast & 105th Saint Lucy's Feast. From Thursday, August 27th to Sunday, August 30th, Endicott, Thacher, and N. Margin Streets become the epicenter of what National Geographic Magazine has affectionately dubbed the 'Feast of all Feasts' – and honestly, they're not wrong! Started way back in 1919 by Italian immigrants from Montefalcione, this is New England's largest Italian Religious Festival. The main feast begins with a ceremony and procession on Friday at 7:00 PM, with Saturday and Sunday offering endless joy from noon to 11:00 PM. Be warned (in the best way possible!) the Grand Procession on Sunday starts at 12:00 PM and can stretch for a full ten hours. And don't forget the Saint Lucy's Feast, which includes its own Thursday night procession at 7:00 PM on Thacher & Endicott Streets. It’s truly an epic conclusion to the summer.

Even as summer winds down, there's one more beautiful procession to anticipate: Santa Rosalia di Palermo. While the exact date sometimes floats a bit, it's currently penciled in for Saturday, September 5th, 2026, starting at 1:00 PM in North Square. It’s a wonderful way to extend the feeling of community and tradition just a little longer.
