The Great Reset: Eagles Fire Offensive Coordinator Kevin Patullo Amidst Overhaul

Well, it seems the Philadelphia Eagles' post-season overhaul is showing no signs of slowing down, does it? Just weeks after the somewhat seismic departure of head coach Chip Kelly, the axe has now officially fallen on offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Talk about a house cleaning in South Philly!

This news, confirmed by multiple sources on Tuesday, January 5th, means Patullo's tenure as offensive coordinator was a surprisingly short one, lasting just a single season. He was, of course, one of Kelly's key hires, brought in to help implement that unique offensive system that promised so much but ultimately delivered a rather underwhelming 7-9 record in 2015. And frankly, after a dismal campaign where the offense often looked, shall we say, disjointed, it probably wasn't a huge surprise for many observers that changes would continue.

Patullo’s role, essentially, was to orchestrate the Eagles' offense under Kelly's overarching vision. When that vision spectacularly crumbled, culminating in Kelly's own dismissal with one game left in the season, it was almost inevitable that those closely associated with him would follow suit. It’s a brutal business, this NFL coaching game, especially when a new regime is poised to take over and wants to wipe the slate clean.

His departure marks the third coaching staff change since Kelly was shown the door. Earlier, we saw assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley and tight ends coach Justin Peelle also let go. It’s a clear message from owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman: they are indeed moving on, thoroughly and completely, from the Chip Kelly era. No remnants allowed, it seems.

Before his brief stint as the Eagles' offensive coordinator, Patullo had quite a journey through the NFL ranks. He’d previously coached quarterbacks for the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets, and wide receivers for both the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs. He even had stints in offensive quality control with the Chiefs and Chicago Bears. A well-traveled coach, for sure, but his time as an OC in Philadelphia proved to be short-lived.

So, as the Eagles continue their intensive search for a new head coach – someone to hopefully breathe new life into the franchise – these moves signal a full commitment to a fresh start. It’s an exciting, albeit tumultuous, time for the Birds. The slate is being wiped clean, and the future, for better or worse, is unwritten.
