Ramban District Reels: Devastating Floods Displace Hundreds, Destroy Homes in Jammu

A relentless deluge has unleashed widespread devastation across Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, leaving a trail of destruction that includes hundreds of damaged homes and the urgent evacuation of nearly a thousand residents. The region is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding, triggered by incessant rainfall, which has brought life to a standstill and tested the resilience of local communities.

District administration officials in Ramban have confirmed the catastrophic scale of the disaster.

A staggering 283 residential houses have been completely or partially damaged, shattering the lives of families who have lost their most precious asset. In response to the escalating crisis, authorities swiftly moved to evacuate 950 individuals from high-risk and low-lying areas, ensuring their safety from the surging waters.

The impact has been particularly severe in critical zones such as Sangaldan and Gool, where floodwaters inundated homes and infrastructure.

Rivers and streams, including the mighty Chenab, swelled to dangerous levels, breaching their banks and transforming calm landscapes into raging torrents. This natural fury also triggered numerous landslides, causing significant disruptions, notably the closure of the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a lifeline for the region.

Emergency response teams have been working tirelessly around the clock.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, the Indian Army, and the district administration have joined forces in a massive rescue and relief operation. Their efforts include evacuating stranded residents, providing immediate assistance, and setting up temporary relief camps to shelter those displaced by the floods.

As the waters slowly recede, the daunting task of assessing the full extent of the damage has begun.

Officials are meticulously evaluating losses, which extend beyond homes to include agricultural land, livestock, and critical infrastructure.
