Oregon's Skies to Echo with Remembrance: F-15 Eagles Honor Memorial Day

There's a unique and profoundly moving way many communities across Oregon will mark Memorial Day this year: with the thunderous roar and breathtaking sight of F-15C Eagle fighter jets soaring overhead. It’s more than just a spectacle, you know; it’s a deeply felt tribute, a solemn nod to the incredible men and women who gave their all for our country.

The Oregon Air National Guard’s very own 142nd Wing, based right here at the Portland Air National Guard Base, is orchestrating these flyovers. They’ll be sending their iconic F-15C Eagles across a significant stretch of the state on Monday, May 27th, to honor our fallen service members. It’s a powerful, tangible reminder of the sacrifices made, a way for us all to pause and reflect on the true meaning of this important day.

So, where and when might you catch a glimpse – and more likely, hear – these magnificent machines? The schedule is, as always with these things, approximate and subject to change based on weather or operational needs. But generally speaking, here’s what’s planned for Memorial Day:

The journey kicks off around 10:45 AM over Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, a truly fitting start. Following that, residents in the Portland area might catch the jets over Lincoln Memorial Park at approximately 11:15 AM, then Riverview Cemetery around 11:30 AM, and finally Skyline Memorial Gardens closer to 11:45 AM. If you're in these areas, just listen for that unmistakable rumble!

Moving south into the mid-Willamette Valley, the F-15s are expected to pass over Newberg’s Pioneer Cemetery at roughly 12:00 PM. Dayton Cemetery will see them around 12:15 PM, with Amity Cemetery following shortly after at 12:30 PM. Keep those eyes to the sky!

The tribute continues into the early afternoon, reaching Corvallis and the Crystal Lake Sports Park around 12:45 PM. Then, Albany Airport will experience the flyover at approximately 1:00 PM. Finally, the day’s planned route concludes with a pass over the Oregon State Capitol in Salem at roughly 1:15 PM, providing a grand and patriotic finale.

Just a quick heads-up: these jets will be flying at what's considered a low level – about 1,000 feet above the ground. So yes, they’re going to be loud! It’s the sound of freedom and remembrance, but it’s certainly something to be aware of if you’re in the vicinity. And do remember, folks, military operations like these are always at the mercy of Mother Nature and unforeseen circumstances, so a slight delay or even a cancellation is a possibility.
