Kerala Tragedy: Drunk Driver Claims Lives of a Family of Three

On the night of September 5, a routine journey turned into a nightmare on the Guruvayur‑Kunnamkulam stretch. Around 11:38 p.m., a car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol hurtled down the road at a reckless speed.

Just a few metres ahead, a motorcycle carrying Muneer (35), his wife Safna (25) and their three‑year‑old son Yamil Aibak was moving in the same direction. The driver, apparently oblivious to the danger, slammed into the bike, sending the three occupants flying a staggering 50 metres away.

Witnesses say the family had briefly stopped by the roadside after receiving a phone call, possibly to catch their breath after attending a wedding ceremony. The impact was so violent that the victims were thrown clear of the vehicle, landing on the hard shoulder.

First‑aid was not offered. The alleged offender, instead of staying to help, fled the scene without calling emergency services. The injured were later rushed to a nearby private hospital, where, despite the doctors’ efforts, they succumbed to their injuries.

Kerala Police have now filed an FIR, accusing the driver of drunken driving, reckless speed and abandoning the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have warned that strict action will be taken under the state’s motor‑vehicle act.

This heartbreaking incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of drunk‑driving laws across the state, reminding everyone that a moment of irresponsibility can destroy an entire family.
