Following her openness about her major weight loss and challenging divorce, singer Kelly Clarkson has now made it clear about a strict rule she has set down as a mother. Earlier, she expressed her desire to refrain from her children joining the music industry, now, she firmly stands that her kids will not be allowed to enter the social media realm until they are under her care. "It can impact the kids deeply, particularly those whose parents are in the spotlight," the singer revealed to People magazine. "That's why I have made it clear that they are not permitted to use it under my custody."
Clarkson and her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, whom she separated in 2020 after a bitter divorce process that ended in 2022, are the parents of 9-year-old daughter River Rose and 7-year-old son Remington Alexander. The singer has banned her children from using social media while staying with her.
When her daughter questioned her about her father’s stance on the matter, Clarkson stated, "You’ll be there for four days a month, make the most of it. Presently, he isn't allowing them to use it either," speaking of Blackstock. "I'll listen when they're older, but until they come up with a viable reason, it’s a no."
Though the pair agrees on the social media prohibition, Clarkson acknowledged that coordinating parenting is not easy. "It involves a lot of emotions and trauma," she says, pointing out that it was particularly challenging at first. "It's tough when you’re married and have different backgrounds and approaches to discipline and education. Implementing these in two different households is hard," she elucidated, mentioning that things have been better now.
Clarkson, who wed Blackstock in 2013 and called it quits in 2020, claims to be tough on herself but denies being a helicopter parent. She adds she does a good job balancing, valuing her children’s independence, and maintains a strict schedule to be around them as much as possible.
She describes her recent relocation from California as one of her best decisions, saying, "I had been unhappy in L.A. for several years. I craved for a fresh start,". Her discussions with NBC, which broadcasts her talk show "The Kelly Clarkson Show," led her to relocate to New York, where she happily resides with her children.
