Upon failure of promptly revealing that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had been hospitalized, the Pentagon is now under severe criticism from journalists and other entities. Austin was admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center last New Year's Day and this was not disclosed until the 5th of January, which led to a significant objection from many members of the media. Austin had complications following a recent elective medical procedure but the Pentagon said Austin's hospitalization was not shared due to "medical and personal privacy issues." Reportedly, both the National Security Council and President Biden were not aware that Austin was hospitalized. Several journalists expressed their disbelief and dissatisfaction with the Pentagon's lack of transparency in this matter. Austin is now recovering after being in the intensive care unit for multiple days. On Saturday, he expressed his acknowledgment of the media's concerns over transparency and committed to improving in the future. The Pentagon Press Association, expressing its own concerns, criticized the Pentagon's failure to inform the media about Austin’s hospitalization until several days later. Some others were shocked and questioned the actions of the Pentagon during Austin’s hospitalization. Fox News Digital is awaiting further comments from the Pentagon on this issue.
