Kelavarapalli Dam Overflows: Flood Alert Issued for Three Tamil Nadu Districts

The tranquil waters of the Kelavarapalli Dam in Krishnagiri district have been transformed into a torrent of activity, as relentless heavy rains have pushed the reservoir to its maximum capacity. Authorities are now grappling with the challenge of managing the massive influx, leading to urgent flood warnings across several downstream districts.

Situated in Tamil Nadu, the Kelavarapalli Dam, with its capacity of 39.36 feet, reached its brim earlier today.

The ceaseless downpour in its extensive catchment areas, including parts of neighboring Karnataka (Kolar) and Andhra Pradesh (Chittoor), has ensured a continuous and significant inflow into the reservoir, far exceeding its usual levels.

In a critical move to ensure dam safety and manage the overwhelming water levels, authorities have commenced the release of approximately 5,500 cusecs of excess water into the Thenpennai River.

This proactive measure, while necessary, has triggered a high-alert situation. A flood warning has been swiftly issued to residents in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tiruvannamalai districts, urging them to exercise extreme caution and take necessary precautions.

The districts lying along the course of the mighty Thenpennai River are now on high alert.

Local administrations are advising communities, especially those living in low-lying areas or near the riverbanks, to relocate to safer ground and remain vigilant. Fishing and other riverine activities have been strictly prohibited until further notice to prevent any untoward incidents. The released water is expected to significantly increase the river's flow, potentially impacting areas further downstream, including parts of Villupuram and Cuddalore districts, although the immediate focus is on the more proximal regions where the impact will be felt first.

As the skies continue to threaten further rainfall, the situation remains dynamic and is being closely monitored by district disaster management units.
