Kanwar Yatra 2026: Prayagraj Ramps Up Security as Lakhs of Devotees Get Ready for Sawan

Every year, as the monsoon clouds gather over the Ganga, a sea of devotees—known as Kanwariyas—sets out on foot, carrying water in bright‑painted kanwars to offer at Shiva temples. This year’s Sawan pilgrimage, the Kanwar Yatra 2026, is slated to begin on 30 July and run through 11 August, culminating on Mahashivratri.

Prayagraj, the traditional launch‑pad for the journey, is buzzing with activity. District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has been at the helm, coordinating a multi‑agency effort that includes the Public Works Department, the National Highways Authority and the Uttar Pradesh Police. Their collective goal? To keep the pilgrimage safe, smooth and, above all, spiritually uplifting.

Security has been beefed up across the city’s main arteries. Police and paramilitary units are being stationed at key choke points, while dedicated pilgrim corridors will divert regular traffic away from the throngs of Kanwariyas. These lanes are not just about keeping cars moving; they’re also lined with temporary barricades and clear signage to guide the devotees.

Roads are getting a fresh look, too. The PWD has inspected and repaired several stretches of the route, ensuring that potholes don’t become stumbling blocks for the weary walkers. Alongside the concrete work, sanitation facilities—portable toilets, hand‑washing stations and waste‑collection points—are being set up at regular intervals.

Because the numbers are expected to be huge—“lakhs” of pilgrims, according to officials—the administration is also bolstering emergency response. Medical teams, fire‑fighters and rapid‑action squads will be on standby, ready to jump into action at a moment’s notice.
