Iran Threatens Retaliation After Alleged U.S. Strike on Darkhovin Nuclear Site

On Sunday, Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi issued a stark warning that Tehran would take an “appropriate” measure in response to what it described as a U.S. airstrike on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant. The facility, still in the very early phases of construction near the Iraqi border, was allegedly hit overnight.

“The U.S. attack on the under‑construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant constitutes a dangerous assault on Iran’s peaceful infrastructure,” Gharibabadi said, adding that the United States bears full responsibility for any resulting instability. He condemned the act as aggression and promised that Iran would defend its national interests.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed it is looking into the reports of the strike. While the plant is not yet operational and experts say the damage is unlikely to pose a radiological hazard, the IAEA nonetheless called for “military restraint” around all nuclear sites in the region.

The flare‑up comes on the heels of a grim weekend for U.S. forces. On July 17, an Iranian ballistic‑missile and drone barrage in Jordan killed two American service members, with a third still listed as missing. The following day, a U.S. soldier was killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone, and another serviceman was wounded.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has been tight‑lipped about details, citing respect for the families of the fallen. However, the agency confirmed that additional service members were medically evacuated after the incidents, though they have since been discharged.

In the midst of these escalating skirmishes, the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization reiterated its condemnation of the alleged U.S. strike, while urging the international community to press for de‑escalation. Meanwhile, analysts warn that any further military moves around a nuclear facility could quickly spiral into a wider regional conflict.
