According to the Union Health Ministry's latest numbers, India observed a daily surge in active cases, with the count standing at 4,187. Reports also indicated one fatality each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat within the past 24 hours. Up until December 5, the daily cases were in double digits before a resurgence reportedly brought on by the cold weather and a new variant. The biggest single-day spike happened on December 31, 2023, with 841 instances, which accounted for 0.2% of the surge witnessed in May 2021, as indicated in a PTI report.
The report said over 92% of active cases are managed at patients' homes, suggesting that the JN.1 variant has not caused a significant rise in new cases, hospitalizations, or deaths. An official source quoted in PTI's report confirmed that the aforementioned variant hasn't spawned an exponential swell in new cases, nor an uptick in hospitalization or mortality rates.
The PTI report also stated that India experienced three waves of the Covid 19 pandemic, with the most severe happening from April to June in 2021. On the deadliest day of this wave, May 7, 2021, the country recorded 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths. Following this, the country has reported over 4.5 crore illnesses and more than 5.3 lakh deaths. The ministry's data shows approximately 4.4 crore people have recovered, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%.
So far, India has distributed 220.67 crore doses of Covid 19 vaccinations, according to official records. Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj noted a trend of rising cases in South India, followed by North India. While urging residents to stay calm, he underscored the importance of precautionary steps. He also shared that all positive Covid 19 samples from RTPCR tests are being sent for genome sequencing. As of now, Delhi has not recorded any case of the new variant.
