Gurugram's Green Guardian: AI and Drones Revolutionize Pond Monitoring

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable urban development and ecological preservation, Gurugram is set to deploy an advanced system utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone technology to meticulously monitor 181 ponds across the district. This innovative initiative aims to safeguard these vital water bodies from encroachment, assess their ecological health, and ensure their long-term viability, marking a significant step forward in environmental management.

The ambitious project, spearheaded by the Haryana Space Applications Centre (HARSAC), will create a comprehensive 'Geo-pond database.' This digital repository will house crucial information about each pond, including its precise geographical coordinates, current area, water quality parameters, and any existing or potential encroachment issues.

This data-driven approach promises to provide an unprecedented level of insight into the state of Gurugram’s natural water assets.

The monitoring process will unfold in several carefully planned phases. Initially, high-resolution drone surveys will capture detailed imagery of all 181 selected ponds.

Following this, the collected data will undergo sophisticated geo-referencing, aligning it with existing topographical maps and geographical information systems (GIS). Subsequently, the information will be rigorously analyzed using AI algorithms, which can detect changes, identify anomalies, and flag potential concerns such as illegal construction or pollution.

To ensure real-time access and proactive management, all this critical data will be integrated into a user-friendly mobile application.

This app will empower relevant authorities, including the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), to monitor the ponds effectively, respond swiftly to issues, and implement timely interventions. The plan includes conducting these comprehensive surveys quarterly, ensuring continuous oversight and adaptive management strategies.

This pioneering project is a direct response to a Supreme Court directive emphasizing the paramount importance of protecting and restoring water bodies.

With a total of 225 water bodies identified within Gurugram, the current phase focuses on 181 crucial ponds. The objective is not only to prevent further degradation but also to actively work towards rejuvenating these ecosystems, making them cleaner, healthier, and integral parts of Gurugram’s green infrastructure.
