Dharmendra Pradhan: From Student Activist in Odisha to Union Education Minister and His Recent Resignation

Dharmendra Pradhan’s name has been a fixture in Indian politics for more than thirty years, a fact that many younger voters only recently discovered when his resignation made headlines.

Born on 26 June 1969 in the small town of Talcher, Odisha, Pradhan grew up in a politically active family; his father, Debendra Pradhan, was already a noted BJP leader. After finishing school, he pursued a master’s in anthropology at Utkal University, but his real education began on the campus’s bustling political stage.

It was the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) that gave the young Pradhan his first taste of leadership. In 1985, while still a student at Talcher College, he was elected president of the college’s students’ union. A few years later he rose to become ABVP’s Odisha state secretary in 1993 and then its national secretary in 1995.

By 1998, the transition from student politics to mainstream politics was complete—Pradhan officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The early 2000s saw him wearing several organisational hats: he led the BJP’s youth wing in Odisha, then moved up to become a national secretary of the party.

His first electoral win came in 2000, when he captured the Pallahara assembly seat. Four years later, he stepped onto the national stage, winning the Deogarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 general elections. In Parliament he served on committees dealing with petitions, energy, and even telecom licensing, gaining a reputation as a diligent legislator.

After a stint in the Rajya Sabha, Pradhan returned to the Lok Sabha from Sambalpur in the 2024 polls, firmly cementing his place in the BJP’s parliamentary leadership. Meanwhile, his ministerial career was gathering steam.

In Narendra Modi’s first term, Pradhan was handed the petroleum and natural gas portfolio as a Minister of State with independent charge. By 2017, he had been elevated to the Union Cabinet, retaining the oil‑and‑gas brief and adding the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship portfolio. A brief spell as Steel Minister followed before a major shift in July 2021: he became the Union Education Minister, a role he kept after the 2024 elections.

As Education Minister, Pradhan was tasked with steering the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, overseeing higher‑education reforms and expanding skill‑training initiatives. However, his tenure was not without turbulence. Allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in competitive exams—most notably the NEET‑UG—sparked student uprisings across the country.

These protests grew louder each week, with groups like the CJP and Janta Party demanding accountability. On 26 July 2026, under mounting pressure, Pradhan tendered his resignation, a move that many saw as a response to the growing unrest rather than a voluntary departure.

Beyond politics, Pradhan’s personal life remains relatively private. He married Mridula Thakur Pradhan on 9 December 1998, and the couple has a daughter and a son. He also holds the Utkalmani Gopabandhu Pratibha Sanman, a prestigious award from the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Whether his resignation marks the end of an era or merely a pause in a long‑standing political journey remains to be seen. What is certain is that his story—rooted in student activism, shaped by party organization, and climaxed by a high‑profile cabinet role—offers a vivid snapshot of India’s evolving political landscape.
