Delhi's CNG Prices Climb Again: The Mounting Burden on Commuters and Households

Another Blow: Delhi CNG Jumps to ₹83.09/kg, Fourth Hike Since Mid-May

Delhi commuters and households are bracing for renewed pressure as CNG prices surge for the fourth time in just over a month, reaching a staggering ₹83.09 per kilogram. This latest ₹2 hike intensifies the growing burden of fuel costs amidst broader economic challenges.

Well, it seems Delhi commuters just got another dose of not-so-great news at the pump. For the fourth time since May 15, the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has taken another noticeable jump, now hitting a rather hefty ₹83.09 per kilogram in the capital. That's a ₹2 increase, plain and simple, and it's certainly adding up for many.

If you're keeping track, this latest surge means that in a little over a month, CNG prices have collectively shot up by a significant ₹8.5 per kilogram. Ouch. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), the city's primary retailer, is the one making these adjustments, and you can imagine the ripple effect this has across daily life here.

And it's not just Delhi feeling the pinch. In places like Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, folks are now paying ₹86.59 per kilogram for CNG. Over in Gurugram, the price is even steeper, reaching ₹91.32 per kilogram. It really paints a picture of how widely this issue is impacting the National Capital Region.

So, why all these frequent increases, you might ask? It primarily boils down to the escalating cost of input gas. The government, earlier this year on April 1, decided to more than double the price of domestically produced natural gas. Yes, a whopping 110% increase. This, naturally, has a cascading effect right down to what you pay at the filling station. When the raw material gets pricier, so does the end product, and it's tough to see any immediate relief on the horizon.

Beyond CNG, households using Piped Natural Gas (PNG) are also feeling the squeeze. In Delhi, the cost for PNG has now climbed to ₹53.59 per standard cubic meter (scm). Similarly, residents in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad are seeing their PNG bills reflect a price of ₹53.84 per scm. It’s all interconnected, unfortunately.

For the thousands of auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators, and even private vehicle owners who rely on CNG, these continuous hikes translate directly into higher operating costs. This, in turn, often means higher fares for passengers, adding another layer to the cost of living that seems to be tightening its grip. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved, from the daily commuter trying to get to work to the family struggling to manage their monthly budget. As inflation continues to be a concern, every such price adjustment, no matter how small it might seem individually, really does contribute to a larger, more challenging economic landscape.
