Delhi Women Commission steps in after Swaroop Nagar tragedy

On Saturday, Delhi Women Commission (DWC) chairperson Lata Gupta paid a solemn visit to the home of a grieving father whose daughter, barely a teenager, was allegedly gang‑raped and murdered in Swaroop Nagar. The meeting was hushed, the air heavy with loss, yet marked by a clear resolve to stand by the family.

Gupta listened intently as the victim’s father recounted the painful details of the night of September 13, when police discovered the girl’s body in an open field near Jaipal Rana’s farmland on Kushak Road. She assured him that the commission would not turn its back on them; instead, it would provide whatever assistance it could – legal, emotional, and practical.

Accompanying Gupta were DWC member Shyambala and senior police officials, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and the Station House Officer (SHO) on duty at the scene. Together they discussed the steps taken so far, and Gupta pressed the officers for a transparent update on the ongoing probe.

“Our top priority is justice for the victim’s family,” Gupta said in a brief press release. She pledged that the commission would stay in regular contact with the police, monitor progress, and ensure no one fights this battle alone.

The police have already arrested four suspects – an adult identified as Shivam (also known as Sudama or Chuchu) and three juveniles aged 16‑17 – after sifting through footage from more than fifty CCTV cameras and tracking a tempo allegedly linked to the crime. The DWC said it will keep a close watch on the case, urging swift and fair action.

While the investigation continues, the commission’s promise of support offers a small, though vital, ray of hope to a family desperate for closure.
