Bay of Bengal Brews Storm: Tamil Nadu Braces for Intense Rainfall

The Bay of Bengal is once again making its presence felt, with a significant weather phenomenon now taking shape. A well-marked low-pressure area has officially formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea. This system, which originated from a cyclonic circulation, is on a path to intensify, signaling a period of intense weather for Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions.

Meteorological experts confirm that this developing system is highly likely to strengthen into a full-fledged depression by March 21.

Its projected trajectory will see it moving west-northwestwards, eventually reaching the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts around March 22. This anticipated arrival has prompted a state of heightened readiness across the affected areas.

The primary concern revolves around the potential for torrential downpours.

Forecasts indicate heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, specifically targeting Tamil Nadu's coastal districts. Residents in Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, should brace for significant precipitation on March 22.

The impact won't be limited to the coast alone.

Several inland districts are also on alert for isolated heavy rainfall on the same day. These include Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchi, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Theni, and Tenkasi. Meanwhile, the bustling metropolis of Chennai is expected to experience light to moderate rain, a welcome respite or a prelude depending on the system's final intensity.

Beyond the rain, strong winds are another critical factor.

The southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, as well as the coastal stretches of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh, are expected to witness winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph, potentially reaching 60 kmph. This poses a serious threat to marine activities.

In light of these hazardous conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern advisory to fishermen.

They are strictly warned against venturing into the sea in the affected regions from March 20 to March 22. This crucial precaution is aimed at ensuring their safety as the weather system makes its approach and impact.

Authorities are closely monitoring the progression of this low-pressure area and will continue to issue regular updates and advisories.

Residents in the path of the system are urged to stay informed through official channels, take necessary precautions, and prepare for potential disruptions as the Bay of Bengal prepares to unleash its fury.
