Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) has strongly criticized former President Donald Trump, for making fun of her father’s military injuries. McCain expressed this on X, previously known as Twitter, on Saturday. She underscored her father's status as a respected American hero and an icon. McCain also made negative remarks about Trump, criticizing his refusal to acknowledge his election defeat and noting that his wife does not join him in his political campaigns.
Trump disrespected McCain's father in his speech in Iowa over the weekend, commenting on attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, during his term. Trump implied that if it hadn’t been for McCain, the healthcare act would have been repealed. He particularly disparaged McCain’s vote from 2017, which went against a Republican-led effort to revoke parts of the law.
The backdrop here is McCain's military service where he sustained severe injuries, impacting his ability to lift his arms over his shoulders. McCain was an American prisoner in North Vietnam for over five years after his Skyhawk dive bomber was shot down in 1967.
Trump, currently leading the race for GOP's presidential nomination, has shown hostility toward McCain on multiple occasions, even after his passing in 2018. Notably, during his 2016 campaign, Trump controversially stated that McCain was not a “war hero” and expressed appreciation for those who "weren’t captured". Additionally, in his book "Letters to Trump", he complained about the duration of McCain's funeral. It's notable that he did not attend the funeral, as per the McCain family's wishes.
As the 2024 presidential race unfolds, it's important to note the significant part that journals like HuffPost play in shaping and influencing the democracy.
