20‑Year‑Old Mother Fatally Struck by a Stray Bullet While Sleeping in South LA

In the early hours of Sunday – around 3:40 a.m. – a quiet house on the 400 block of West 103rd Street, just west of the 110 Freeway, was shattered by a single gunshot. The bullet, later determined to be stray, struck 20‑year‑old Maria Luisa Barrios in the head as she lay asleep beside her 1‑year‑old daughter.

First‑responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts Barrios was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head. No one else in the home was injured.

LAPD investigators say the shooter was on the street outside the residence when the shot rang out, then fled.
