Zundert Flower Parade 2026: 90 Years of Blooming Dutch Tradition

Imagine strolling through a town where every street corner bursts into a moving garden, each float taller than a three‑storey house and draped in millions of vibrant dahlias. That’s exactly what happened in Zundert, the Netherlands, on September 6, 2026, when the annual Corso Zundert rolled out its 90th edition.

What started back in 1936 as a modest procession of painted bicycles and tiny flower‑adorned carts has swelled into the world’s largest flower parade. Today, twenty local neighbourhood groups—known as hamlets—compete fiercely, each building a colossal float that can reach up to nine metres in height. The winning creation this year came from the hamlet of Stuivezand, whose float “The Sea As a Mirror” glittered with delicate shades of blue and silver, earning applause from both locals and tourists.

The sheer scale of the event is staggering. Across roughly 33 hectares of dedicated fields, the hamlets nurture about 600,000 dahlia tubers, selecting more than fifty varieties to achieve the perfect palette of colours. These blooms unfurl between late July and early October, with the peak harvest arriving just in time for the parade, ensuring every petal is fresh and vivid.

Getting from a humble tuber to a towering sculpture is a months‑long labour of love. Volunteers first erect sturdy steel frames, then layer papier‑mâché to sculpt the desired shape. Only when the skeleton is complete do they begin the painstaking task of hand‑pinning each dahlia onto the structure. Some floats boast half a million individual flowers, turning nature’s modest blossom into a massive, living artwork.

Dahlias are the star of the show for a good reason. Their incredible variety in size, form and hue gives designers an almost unlimited natural colour bank. By cultivating a range of shades—from deep burgundy to sunrise‑yellow—the growers can weave intricate patterns that would be impossible with any synthetic material.

Beyond the spectacle, the parade is a testament to community spirit.
