While bigger moves await, the Yankees continue to add depth on their 40 man roster. The club claimed outfielder Bubba Thompson off waivers from the Reds on Thursday, taking a flier on a former first round draft pick. The 25 year old Thompson, a right handed hitter who has played all three outfield spots, has hit .242 with a .591 OPS and 22 steals across 92 big league games with the Rangers.
They designated him for assignment in August. He was claimed by the Royals before the Reds picked him up off waivers in October, only to DFA him last week. Thompson has two minor league options remaining, which gives the Yankees some flexibility in carrying him on the 40 man roster, though they are expected to make more moves this offseason – namely to solidify their rotation.
The addition of Thompson put the Yankees at 39 players on their 40 man roster, which will become 40 once the signing of Cody Poteet becomes official. Known for his speed, Thompson has hit .268 with a .765 OPS and 489 strikeouts in 1,861 plate appearances in the minor leagues..
