Two arrested after crash uncovers guns, drugs in Winnipeg

What started as an ordinary traffic collision on a chilly Tuesday afternoon quickly spiraled into a full‑blown police operation on the east side of Winnipeg. Officers responded to a report of a multi‑vehicle crash on St. Mary’s Road around 3:15 p.m., and while checking the wreckage they discovered a stash of firearms and several bags of what appeared to be cocaine and methamphetamine tucked under the front seat.

Detective Sergeant Lara McIntyre, a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Police Service, said the discovery was “surprising and concerning.” She explained that once the officers secured the scene, they conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and found two semi‑automatic pistols, a rifle, plus the narcotics. “We had to act swiftly to ensure public safety,” McIntyre added, a hint of relief in her voice.

The two individuals inside the vehicle – a 27‑year‑old male and a 31‑year‑old female – were taken into custody at the scene. Both are now facing multiple charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and dangerous driving causing a collision. Their court appearances are scheduled for early next month.

Fortunately, despite the seriousness of the items found, no one was seriously injured in the crash. A teenage passenger in the back seat suffered only minor cuts and was treated at the nearby St. Boniface Hospital before being released. The police have praised the quick response of the emergency medical crew, noting that the victims’ “well‑being was the top priority.”
