The Unnao Case: Legal Twists and Turns Continue

Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former BJP legislator whose name became synonymous with the horrific Unnao rape case, recently sought a direct hearing from the Supreme Court. But, alas, it seems the apex court had other plans for his bail plea, opting for a more procedural route in his ongoing legal battles.

On Monday, the Supreme Court, after carefully considering Sengar's plea, decided against intervening directly at this stage. Instead, in a move that signals a clear procedural direction, it gently but firmly told Sengar to take his request to the Delhi High Court. "This isn't really the right forum for this particular petition," the bench essentially conveyed, "you need to go to the High Court first to pursue this matter." This redirection pertains specifically to the case involving the tragic death of the Unnao victim's father while he was in judicial custody.

It’s worth remembering, if you recall the harrowing details of the Unnao case, that Sengar is not just convicted in the primary rape case. He's also a key accused in the circumstances surrounding the father's tragic demise. The CBI, the central investigating agency, had indeed filed a detailed chargesheet in that matter, naming Sengar, his brother Atul Singh, and several others, pointing to a conspiracy and, quite frankly, a shocking cover-up.

Sengar, as many would know, is currently serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor girl from Unnao back in 2017. His legal woes, however, extend far beyond that singular conviction. Earlier this year, for instance, the Delhi High Court had actually denied him interim bail; he had sought it specifically to attend his daughter's wedding, a request that was ultimately turned down. It really underscores the gravity of the charges and the complex legal net he finds himself entangled in.

This recent decision by the Supreme Court, while seemingly procedural, is quite significant. It reinforces the hierarchy of the judicial system and ensures that cases are heard in the appropriate courts, preventing a direct bypass of the High Court. For Sengar, it means a continuation of his legal battle, now redirected to the Delhi High Court, where he will once again try to secure bail in the deeply sensitive case involving the victim's father. The wheels of justice, though sometimes slow and circuitous, continue to turn.
