The events, frankly, unfolded in the bleak, early hours of a Monday morning, sometime around 2 a.m. Deputies, for reasons that now seem to underscore an unimaginable tragedy, spotted a motorcyclist behaving erratically. A pursuit began, as they often do, but this one, this particular chase, was destined to end in sorrow near the 210 Freeway and Vineyard Avenue.

Deputy Nunez, a dedicated public servant, was struck by gunfire during that pursuit. Rushed to a hospital, hopes must have soared, only to be cruelly dashed. The suspect, identified as Oscar Rodriguez, 28, wasn't far away. After a brief but intense search, authorities located him and, thankfully, took him into custody. Rodriguez now faces murder charges, a cold legal reality for an act that has left such profound human devastation in its wake. And while justice, one hopes, will run its course, it cannot, alas, bring Andrew Nunez back.
