Rajasthan's Legal Revolution: Conviction Rates Soar by 18% Thanks to New Laws and Tech Integration

In a significant declaration, Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded Rajasthan's remarkable achievement in bolstering its justice system, announcing an impressive 18% surge in the state's conviction rate. This substantial improvement, he revealed, is a direct consequence of the meticulous implementation of India's transformative new criminal justice laws.

Addressing the 60th Raising Day celebrations of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in Delhi, Mr.

Shah highlighted Rajasthan as a shining example of how the new legal framework can revolutionize law enforcement. The focus, he underscored, has shifted towards leveraging cutting-edge technology and forensic science to streamline investigations and ensure swift, decisive justice.

The Union Home Minister specifically pointed to the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) as game-changers.

These modern laws, which came into effect on July 1, 2024, are designed to replace archaic colonial-era statutes with a citizen-centric, technology-driven approach to criminal justice.

Mr. Shah emphasized that these new laws mandate forensic investigations for all crimes punishable with seven years or more of imprisonment, a move poised to significantly enhance the quality of evidence and reduce reliance on traditional, sometimes less reliable, methods.

This forward-thinking mandate, he stated, is crucial for securing higher conviction rates and ensuring that justice is not only served but also seen to be served effectively.

Furthermore, the Minister elaborated on the government's commitment to equipping the justice system with advanced tools.

He mentioned the development of an IT-based investigation system, which is being made available to all states. This system is crucial for enabling police forces to adapt to the new laws, which also feature provisions for trials in absentia and other modern judicial processes.
