Overnight Storms Could Lash Metro Detroit with Damaging Winds

Tonight, as a sharp cold front slides eastward across Southeast Michigan, forecasters are warning that Metro Detroit could see a bout of severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed the entire area under a Marginal Risk – the lowest level on their five‑point scale, but still enough to keep watches and warnings on standby.

The big worry? Damaging straight‑line winds. Meteorologists say gusts could top 50 mph, enough to knock down tree limbs, snap power lines and make driving treacherous. Alongside the wind, heavy rain and occasional hail are likely, and there’s a slim but real chance of an isolated tornado forming in the more unstable pockets.

Rain should begin after midnight, rolling through the city during the early‑morning hours. By the time commuters hit the road, the heaviest showers are expected to be moving out, though a few sprinkles could linger into the afternoon as the front pushes through.

Temperatures won’t be too harsh. Overnight lows will stick in the mid‑ to upper‑60s °F, giving a relatively comfortable night despite the weather drama. Tuesday’s highs will climb back into the low‑ to mid‑80s °F, then gradually ease to the mid‑70s by Wednesday as the cooler air settles in.
