Ottawa Police Intercept Major Drug and Firearm Cache in Vanier-Overbrook Traffic Stop

Ottawa Police have delivered a significant blow to illicit drug and gun activity in the capital, successfully intercepting a substantial cache of narcotics and a loaded firearm during a traffic stop earlier this week. The incident, which unfolded in the Vanier-Overbrook area, underscores the ongoing vigilance of local law enforcement in tackling serious crime and enhancing community safety.

The proactive operation began on Tuesday, April 2, when the East Criminal Investigations Section initiated a traffic stop on St-Laurent Boulevard near Coventry Road.

What commenced as a routine interaction quickly escalated as officers identified suspicious circumstances within the vehicle, leading to the prompt arrest of the driver.

A subsequent and thorough search of the vehicle yielded an alarming discovery: a quantity of suspected crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and fentanyl – all highly dangerous illicit substances known to fuel addiction and associated crimes.

In addition to the narcotics, police uncovered a loaded 9mm Glock handgun, a significant and concerning find given its potential for harm in the community. A sum of cash, believed to be proceeds of crime, was also seized at the scene, further indicating the scope of the alleged illegal activities.

The arrested individual has been identified as Abshir Hassan, 29, of Ottawa.

He now faces a lengthy list of serious charges, reflecting the gravity of the alleged offenses. These include multiple counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking (relating to crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl), possession of proceeds of crime, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, and breach of probation.

Hassan was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, April 3, to formally face these charges.
