Bollywood actress Anjali Patil fell victim to a cyber scam orchestrated by a scammer posing as a Mumbai police officer. The imposter, claiming to be associated with FedEx Courier Company, informed the actress of an intercepted parcel bound for Taiwan registered in her name. He alleged that drugs were discovered in the said parcel.
He also told Ms. Patil that her Aadhaar was found in the parcel along with the contraption. To prevent potential misuse of her personal information, the actress was instructed to contact the Mumbai cyber police. Subsequently, a Skype call from an individual identifying as Mr. Banerjee from the cyber police alleged Patil's Aadhaar card was found to be linked with three bank accounts.
These accounts were also said to be involved in a money laundering case. The scammer proceeded to demand a processing fee of Rs 96,525 to verify Ms. Patil’s innocence. Pressured by escalating threats and fabricated accusations, Patil ended up transferring an additional Rs 4,83,291 to a fraudulent account.
Cumulatively she lost Rs 5.79 lakhs. : Anjali received a call from Deepak Sharma who identified himself as an employee of DebEx Courier Company After many days Anjali Patil confided about the incident with her landlord. Realizing the deception of cyber scam, she reported the incident to the DN Nagar Police, who initiated an investigation.
