Mehbooba Mufti Calls on Union Health Minister to Speed Up AIIMS Awantipora Project

Mehbooba Mufti urges JP Nadda to expedite AIIMS Awantipora work

Former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to Union Health Minister JP Nadda to fast‑track the stalled AIIMS Awantipora construction, citing urgent healthcare needs in the region.

At a press conference in Srinagar on Tuesday, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti made a direct appeal to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, asking him to pull the trigger on the long‑pending AIIMS project in Awantipora.

“Our people have been waiting for a world‑class medical facility for far too long,” Mufti said, her tone a blend of frustration and hope. “Every day, patients travel hundreds of kilometres for basic treatment. The AIIMS in Awantipora must become a reality now.”

She reminded the audience that the foundation stone for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences was laid in 2020, yet progress on the campus—planned to house a teaching hospital, research labs and a medical college—has been painfully slow. “The delays are not just bureaucratic; they affect lives,” she added.

Mufti also highlighted the strategic importance of the institution for the Kashmir valley, noting that a fully functional AIIMS would not only provide advanced healthcare but also create employment and boost local education. “It’s not merely a building; it’s a promise of better health and a brighter future for our youth,” she emphasized.

In response, Minister Nadda, flanked by senior officials, acknowledged the concerns. He pledged to convene a high‑level review committee within the next fortnight and assured that additional funds would be released to accelerate construction. “We understand the urgency and are committed to delivering AIIMS Awantipora at the earliest,” Nadda stated.

The meeting concluded with a joint call for cooperative effort between the Centre and the state, urging all stakeholders to cut red‑tape and prioritize the project. As the conversation drew to a close, the lingering question remained: will the promised speed translate into bricks and mortar, or will it stay a lingering promise?
