India records 441 fresh COVID 19 JN.1 variant cases, active cases has gone down

India has recorded 441 fresh variant cases. However there are zero deaths recorded in the country in last 24 hours, the updated data from union health ministry said. The number of active cases has gone down to 3,238, the data adds. The number of daily cases was in double digits till December 5. The the spike in cases was seen amid cold weather conditions and after the emergence of a new an omicron lineage descendent as per WHO.

ADVERTISEMENT After December 5, the highest single day rise of 841 cases was reported on December 31, 2023, which was 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021. Of the 3,238 active cases, a large majority (around 92 per cent) are recovering under home isolation. has spread to 16 states with a total of 971 cases of the infection reported till January 11, ANI report said.

The states with highest number of cases reported of the new variant are from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala, followed by Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Delhi. As per PTI report, "The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in the hospitalisation and mortality," an official source said.

The highest number of cases were logged in Maharashtra, which has reported a total of 250 JN.1 cases so far, ANI reported. While 250 cases were reported from Maharashtra, 199 came from Karnataka, 148 from Kerala, 49 from Goa, 36 from Gujarat, 30 from Andhra Pradesh, 26 each from Tamil Nadu and Telangana, 21 from Delhi, three from Odisha and one from Haryana.

India has witnessed three waves of COVID 19 in the past with the peak incidence of daily cases and deaths being reported during the Delta wave during April June 2021. At its peak, 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021. Total 44,484,733 people have recovered from this illness so far and the country's current recovery rate is 98.8 percent, while the fatality rate in India is 1.18 percent.
