India Day in Germany Highlights Scientific Milestones and Cultural Diversity

Berlin – On 18 September 2026, the Embassy of India in Germany joined forces with Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) to mark India Day in the university town of Cottbus. The occasion was more than a ceremony; it was a vivid showcase of India’s scientific strides and its kaleidoscopic cultural fabric.

Ambassador Ajit Gupte opened the event, reminding attendees that the India‑Germany relationship has been quietly but steadily expanding across education, science, technology, trade, tourism and talent mobility. “We are building bridges that go beyond the usual diplomatic corridors,” he said, his voice warm but purposeful.

Prof. Gesine Grande, BTU’s president, and the vice‑president of the Indian Students Association Cottbus (ISAC) took the stage next. They highlighted the university’s long‑standing collaborations with Indian institutions, noting joint research projects in renewable energy, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. Around 200 guests – students, scientists, diplomats and local officials – listened as the program unfolded.

The showcase featured poster sessions, live demos of Indian‑developed low‑cost diagnostic kits, and a mini‑exhibition of traditional art, music and cuisine. One highlight was a presentation on a solar‑powered water‑purification system designed by a team from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which drew genuine curiosity from German researchers.

Just a few days earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the phone. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepen the Strategic Partnership that now spans defence, clean energy, advanced technologies and talent exchange. Modi posted on X, calling Germany “an important pillar of India’s engagement with Europe” and pledging to “continue strengthening our partnership for the benefit of both peoples.”

Celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties, the India Day event served as a reminder that the bond between the two nations is not just historic—it’s evolving. With initiatives like this, India and Germany are signaling that science, culture and shared aspirations will continue to drive their collaboration forward.
