Jonny Bairstow, England's wicketkeeper batter, has stated that should India choose to utilise turning pitches throughout their five-test series later in the month, the home team might decrease their seam attack’s effectiveness. England's 1-3 loss in the Test series to India was on spin-friendly surfaces during their 2021 tour of India. Bairstow, during an interview with Sky Sports, mentioned that India has the versatility to produce a variety of pitches, not all of which would necessarily favour spin bowling. "We all know their seam attack is very strong. It’s more on whether they will opt for turning pitches right from day one, which could potentially diminish their seam attack’s edge", he said.
Bairstow, who is 34, intends not to over-complicate the task of facing spinners in India, based on previous experience. He mentioned, “The guys actually played incredibly well in the first test match, especially Rooty (Joe Root), who scored a double. However, the conditions changed drastically afterwards”. He added, " It’s clear that top-quality spinners, especially in India, will pose a challenge. But who exactly amongst Axar, Jadeja, and Kuldeep will play, we’ll have to wait".
Bairstow also clarified that it's vital for all team members, not just spinners, to contribute to wicket-taking. “It’s going to be a united bowling attack's responsibility to grab 20 wickets. Additionally, the seamers and fielders play a huge role too”, he elaborated.
England's test series in India commences on January 25 in Hyderabad. Bairstow hopes to prove his mettle in the upcoming matches. He has been actively working on fitness, especially on strengthening his ankle after an injury. While he welcomes the return of fellow wicketkeeper Ben Foakes to the England squad, he remains unsure about who will keep wicket in India. He is, however, satisfied with his current form, regardless of his role as either a wicketkeeper or batter.
