How trauma shapes and influences our decision making abilities

People raised in dysfunctional environments often internalise the trauma experienced during childhood, which significantly affects their behavioural patterns and perceptions of adult relationships. Even a single traumatic event can alter our outlook and decision-making process significantly, writes psychologist Caroline Middelsdorf. She notes that trauma victims often struggle to make clear decisions or understand their true desires.

Caroline Middelsdorf shared how trauma affects decision making abilities in a post on Instagram:

Key effects of trauma on decision-making include hyperarousal and emotional dysregulation, often resulting in heightened stress and anxiety levels. This, in turn, increases the production of the stress hormone, cortisol, potentially impairing our ability to make sound decisions.

Trauma disrupts the natural balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, causing increased stress hormones in the prefrontal cortex, a crucial region for decision-making in the brain.

Another consequence of trauma is hypervigilance, where individuals are constantly alert for threats. This heightened fear response can disrupt decision-making processes, making proper assessment of situations challenging.

Traumatic experiences often result in recurrent flashbacks and intrusive memories, impairing normal cognitive functioning.

Chronic stress from trauma impacts self-perception, affecting self-confidence and self-trust, thus undermining decision-making abilities. Guilt and shame, often associated with trauma, make it difficult to make decisions beneficial for the individual.
