Google Clarifies Play Store Payments: Paytm UPI Still Works, But With a Catch

Recent reports hinting at Paytm UPI ceasing to function for Google Play Store payments have caused a stir among users. However, Google has stepped forward to clarify its stance, reassuring users that popular third-party UPI services, including Paytm UPI, will continue to be viable payment options within the Google Play ecosystem.

The key lies in understanding Google's mandatory billing system policy.

Google’s policy dictates that developers must utilize Google Play's billing system for all in-app purchases. This doesn't mean a blanket ban on third-party UPI apps like Paytm UPI. Instead, it mandates that any payment, whether for an app purchase or an in-app transaction, must be processed through Google Play's integrated billing system.

Essentially, if you're buying an app directly from the Play Store or making an in-app purchase – perhaps for a premium feature in a game or a subscription within an application – your Paytm UPI payment will still go through.

The crucial distinction is that this transaction will be routed via Google Play's own billing infrastructure. Google reiterates its commitment to offering a diverse range of payment methods to users through its billing system, and UPI remains a prominent choice within this framework.

The company confirmed, “We offer a choice of payment methods to users via Google Play's billing system, which also includes UPI.

This means if you use Paytm UPI, you will still be able to make payments on Google Play, as long as it is done via Google Play's billing system.” This statement aims to dispel any misconceptions that Paytm UPI itself is being blocked.

Furthermore, Google highlighted its alternative billing system pilot program, which has been in operation in India for over a year.

This initiative allows eligible developers to offer users an alternative billing system in addition to Google Play's. For transactions made through this alternative system, developers are subject to a reduced service fee, maintaining their ability to offer choices while adhering to Google's overarching policy.
