Russell (American Hustle) has officially signed on to direct the upcoming Linda Ronstadt biopic. This marks Russell’s latest directorial project since 2022’s murder mystery comedy Amsterdam, which underperformed at the box office.

Who’s involved in the Linda Ronstadt biopic? The untitled music drama will be led by Golden Globe nominee Selena Gomez as she portrays the role of the legendary Latina singer, who’s best known for her versatility in different music genres. This serves as Gomez’s first major movie project as the lead in a long while since 2008’s Another Cinderella Story, 2011’s Monte Carlo, and 2016’s The Fundamentals of Caring.

The former Disney star is currently starring alongside Martin Short and Steve Martin in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which will be returning for its fourth season. The upcoming Linda Ronstadt movie is being produced by James Keach and the acclaimed musician’s manager, John Boylan. Keach previously produced the 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.

Throughout her decades long career, Ronstadt released 29 studio albums, including her popular Heart Like a Wheel and Simple Dreams albums. She has won eleven Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, and two Academy of Country Music awards. After announcing her official retirement in 2011, it was later revealed that she can no longer sing due to Parkinson’s Disease.
